You read that right: The Last of Us 2 is nearing the end of development and will be in our hands in As endings go, The Last of Us's was pretty conclusive. Given the first game was hailed by players and critics alike as a masterpiece with excellent, emotional storytelling and engaging, realistic characters, we have to admit that the decision to release a follow-up isn't particularly shocking.

We'd probably have been more surprised if there wasn't one. And yet, when The Last of Us 2 was first announced, we'd be lying if we said our hearts didn't skip a beat. The Last of Us 2 was first announced by Naughty Dog at PlayStation Experience in alongside a teaser date but it wasn't until September date we were finally told the game's release date during a State of Play livestream.

Now we know for sure that we'll be joining Ellie on her next adventure in February Read on to find out more! The most recent trailer for The Last of Us 2 is also its release date announcement trailer. Shown during the September State of Play stream, it confirms the game will be coming on February 21 and shows Ellie in action as well as a glimpse at Joel.

The Last of Us 2 was shown during E3 This trailer finally gives us a look at Ellie in an intimate scene before cutting away to some of the brutal but stealth-based combat we can expect to see in the game when it's launched.

The gameplay sequence gives us a look at Ellie fighting for her life in the wild. Success in a fight appears to require the right balance between stealth and all out attack as damage seems to have a more realistic impact.

Ellie can move quietly between areas, taking weapons from bodies and crafting, before bursting out and taking down her enemies. It's a different creature in many ways to the original The Last of Us but it looks like something to look forward to, with more advanced enemies to challenge us and more complex gameplay to thrill us.

During a panel it was confirmed that the game will be set in the city of Seattle and the darker themes we know are coming were touched upon.

You can watch the panel for yourself below:. Another trailer for the game was shown at Sony's press conference during the Paris Sortie Week. This trailer is playstation 5 minutes long, focusing on conflicts between sortie human factions in the game.

It shows part 2 is going to have a dark story, perhaps even darker than the first, and the trailer date fairly harrowing to watch. Visually impressive though it is, do note that it's gory before you watch it for yourself below.

Despite the fact that the game was early in development, the trailer showed a full non-gameplay scene that features both Ellie and Joel.

You can playstation it below:. After hoping, praying and speculating we finally got confirmation during the September State of Play that The Last of Us 2 will be released on February 21 However, that changed when game director Neil Druckmann published an open letter to fans about a planned delaysaying the new launch date would be May 29 instead. Apologies for the delay. Date Dog has posted a mysterious job listing recently for an online systems programmer for a new online experience.

While the listing doesn't detail which game the person will be working on, there are naturally some rumors milling around that it could be for an online experience related to The Last of Us 2, though there's an argument to be made for another Uncharted instalment. A few months ago, Naughty Dog confirmed that The Last of Us 2 won't launch with an online mode due to a wish to completely focus on the game's substantial single-player story.

However, it was added that something would be coming eventually and separately from playstation main game. We won't know for certain what game this sortie project is related to but it's exciting to see that something is in the works. In the interview, Gross praised her colleagues at Naughty Dog as "wizards" and said that they're date together to "make the most complex, nuanced character in a videogame". This character is undoubtedly Ellie who Gross touches on later in the interview.

Ellie, Gross explains, is a traumatised character on a "mission for justice" who is, overall, "driven by love" for other characters like Joel and Dina. According to Gross, the narrative is about seeing who Ellie "can become when she grows up sortie such a hostile environment. Rather than throw in new enemies just because they can, Druckmann says that the studio has carefully considered new Infected additions like the Shamblers. Human enemies are also more dynamic.

According to Druckmann, every human enemy in the game will have a unique name so that when they die their comrades might scream out their name in grief. Human enemies can become emotional and unpredictable, making combat more dynamic and realistic.

Similarly, this has made it possible to give Ellie and all of the other characters a new animation system called motion mapping making their movements more playstation and more realistic:. The Last of Us 2 is going to be an ambitious game. So ambitious that the adventure will be split across two discs. There are few things more frustrating than a completely incompetent ally in a combat scenario when you're playing a game and, fortunately, it seems that won't be a concern with The Last of Us 2.

In an interview with GameSpotthe game's co-director Anthony Newman said that the team took criticisms with regards to allies in the first game on board and are looking to rectify them in the sequel.

The Last of Us fans finally got confirmation that The Europe of Us 2 will launch on February 21 during the September State of Play alongside a brand new trailer that features plenty of action and a look at Ellie and Joel. Over the course of the event, it was also confirmed that The Last of Us 2 will not launch with a multiplayer element. In a tweet, Naughty Dog stated that its main focus for the game's launch is its single player which is "far and away the most ambitious project Naughty Dog has ever undertaken".

That doesn't mean, however, there will never be any online playstation to The Last of Us 2. The tweet goes on to clarify that at some point in the future an online element for the game will be launched when it's ready. An update regarding multiplayer: pic. Any online element will be worth the wait, however, according to series co-creator Bruce Straley who left the studio in Taking to Twitter, Straley noted that the online multiplayer is "extremely ambitious" and that any delay is for "good reasons" and that fans are "in good hands".

September 27, Some brand new The Last of Us 2 footage was apparently shown behind closed doors during the recent GameStop managers conference in Nashville.

The footage, which will be available to the wider world "soon", was short and showcased some of the game's stealth aspects, including how clickers can be used to your advantage.

When this "soon" that the footage will be released is isn't yet known but one opportunity for Sony and Naughty Dog europe show some new footage would be during Paris Games Week in October if it doesn't drop even sooner.

During Manchester Comic-Con, Baker was asked what can be expected from the sequel and wasn't able to give away much.

What he did say, however, was that "it's hands down the most ambitious game that Naughty Dog has ever europe for sure. It's far larger than I thought was going to be possible. When it came to the release date, though, Baker wasn't able to make any announcements. Not because he didn't want to though obviously and understandably he didn't but because he and his fellow cast members don't know the release date just yet. Via PlayStationLifestyle. There was much excitement on May 29 as a result of PlayStation exclusive Death Stranding finally playstation its release date confirmed as November 8 This has, however, had a ripple effect which is concerning fans of The Last of Date 2.

With Death Stranding now slotted in as PlayStation's big exclusive release for the holiday season ofit's been rumored by Sortie Jason Schreier among others that The Last of Us 2, also originally said to be looking at a late release, will now be pushed into early This has not been confirmed by Naughty Dog or PlayStation so it remains nothing more than rumor at the moment.

It's also worth pointing out that The Last of Us 2 has never had a set-in-stone release date anyway. However, an early release date for The Last of Us 2 does not seem impossible at this point as PlayStation having two such huge releases close together at the end of would be a surprise indeed.

A recent interview with Ellie actress, Ashley Johnson, has also added to those early rumors as, when asked by the interviewer when the game europe release, she appears to begin to say February.

However, nothing has been confirmed by Naughty Dog just yet so everything stands as rumor only at the the moment. News around The Last of Us 2 europe been hotting up recently as the game inches closer towards completion. Lot of awesome positions open to help us close out this game As promising as these playstation are, they don't reveal anything about whether or not we can expect to see The Last of Us 2 this year or next.

In fact, recent rumors have suggested that we will see some kind of news around this time. Things have been quiet on the official news front for The Last of Us 2 but we've been glad to see some studio insiders and actors from the game posting images on social media which show sortie the game's motion capture is well underway. Actors Ashley Johnson and Shannon Woodward have both posted images of themselves wearing mocap suits.

They didn't give much away but the fact that Naughty Dog is this far into the motion capture process suggests we might at least be closer to hearing about a possible release date. The Last of Us 2 is still in the works, but we now know that one of its lead voice actors, Troy Baker, has had an in-depth look and he thinks the game is 'awesome'.

We just finished a playtest. Druckmann will, of course, still be heavily involved in the creation europe the game but it's now europe headed date by Anthony Newman and Kurt Margenau, both of whom were lead designers on Uncharted 4. Although it was no slouch in the gameplay department, it was the story told by The Last of Us that stuck with us for months afterwards. Naturally Naughty Dog had to give us some kind of hint about where the sequel would go.

At the sortie we know The Last of Us 2 will take place in the city of Seattle, five years after the end of the original game, with a 19 year old Ellie taking the starring playable role.

Joel will still appear in the game but if the teaser trailer is anything to go by, he could be a much more passive presence. This time around, Ellie is extremely angry about From what we saw from the teaser trailer she wants revenge, which to her appears to be a dish best served deadly.

Anger, hate and revenge are going to be key themes this time around so expect to be in for an emotionally heavy ride. In the trailer for the game shown at Paris Games Week inwe got a europe at how dark the game is likely to be. The trailer focuses on the opposing relationships between human characters in the game and features some seriously cringe-inducing violence.

It doesn't tell us much about any new characters of how they'll relate to one another but it does confirm that we're going into a dark game world in The Last of Us part 2. In a recent panel at PSX both Druckmann and Gross said that though the game's story will indeed be dark and there'll be a focus on the theme of hate, "there is hope" and date will be "lighthearted moments.

We can't pretend we're not relieved to hear this playstation the game's controversial Paris Games Week trailer which, Druckmann said, was intended to highlight the game's exploration of the pursuit of justice.

When asked at a PSX panel whether or not Joel or Ellie may die, Druckmann responded that "no one is safe" highlighting that the game's story really could go anywhere. E3 brought us our first proper look at the gameplay in The Last of Us Part 2. Given Ellie is now the leading playable sortie, it was expected that things would be a little different from the first game and the presentation at the show made this fairly clear.

Ellie will have some moves similar to Joel but there are some things she'll be able to do that are completely different. For one thing she can jump - the new jump button should make the world of The Last of Us Part 2 more complex and more enjoyable to traverse.

It also has the potential to make combat more interesting.

Games like Battlefield and Call of Duty can easily consume more than 50GB of space, and native 4K video games will be even heavier. When next-generation titles roll around, we'd imagine Sony will be looking at handling their big file sizes with a 2TB console, which is great news for gamers. The only other obvious improvement would be to boost the console's overall performance to ship quality PlayStation 5 graphics. Sony currently uses a high-end AMD Radeon graphics card in the PS4 Pro, so we'd expect to see a newer-generation version of this in Sony's next console.

Sadly, we'd expect that future Sony consoles will be closer to the starting price of the Xbox One X than its predecessors. Sony will be shipping its next console with high-end components in a bid to trump Xbox — and these powerful graphics cards and processors won't come cheap.

The PlayStation 4's user interface attempts simplicity as a priority. The main place for entertainment options, the Content area, is prominently displayed with large square icons on a horizontal line arranged by the most recently used. Users can scroll through this gamer newsfeed in an alternating, brick-like formation reminiscent of the social media site Pinterest.

Many other main objects will display additional information when having the cursor selected on them. A game may have news updates or advertisements for its downloadable content.

Recently played games receive tiles along with a number of mandatory items like the Live from PlayStation and the Internet Browser applications. Content icon customization and options on how to sort them would give players a way to mold the display to better suit their needs. The augmented reality application, the Playroom comes pre-installed with the PlayStation 4 console. According to Sony, it is a "fantastically fresh augmented reality entertainment experience", which has been created by combining the light bar located on the front of DualShock 4 controller with the PlayStation Camera.

Players are allowed to produce a small floating robot called Asobi, who interacts with the players, scans their faces and shoots fireballs. Once the PlayStation Camera identifies the player with the help of the light bar on the front, a flick on the touchpad of the DualShock 4 controller brings up the augmented reality Bots function of the PlayRoom, which creates the illusion that there are hundreds of little bots inside the controller, which can be released simply with a tap on the track pad that functions like the PlayStation Vita.

PS4 owners can view their smartphone or PlayStation Vita for drawing the object and flick it anywhere for the augmented reality Bots to play with.

Through Remote Play users can operate their PS4 through the uses of a PlayStation Vita handheld game console, allowing for the play of PS4 games and other media on the small device via streaming. The second screen can be used to display unique content when playing games that support this option, but it should not be confused with a split-screen.

The second screen may be used to show extra content for example maps, alternate camera angles, radar or even playbooks in sports games. Apart from PlayStation Vita, other mobile devices such as iPads or Android tablets can also be used as a second screen. A heavy emphasis on social features has been placed on the PlayStation 4 console, loading up the PS4 with a number of share-centric apps and features. This gives gamers the ability to chat with other users whether or not they're playing the same title. The PS4's sharing capabilities adds another layer to console gaming. PS4 owners are able to capture or livestream the gameplay with a simple button touch. There are also other social features such as community creation. Some of them are introduced via system updates. Favorite Groups is a new section within the Friends app, and acts as a way to quickly access other people a user plays with the most.

This feature is aimed at making it easier and faster to get into a game session with friends. On the other hand, communities are new hubs that can be formed around shared interests like games, activities, or play styles. There also exist other smaller social features on PS4, such as the ability to message a friend with a request to watch their gameplay live. While the PlayStation 4 console can function without an Internet connection at all, it provides more functionality when it is connected to the Internet.

Online play is the main pillar for the PlayStation 4, but a PlayStation Plus subscription is required to play the majority of PS4 titles online, unlike PlayStation 3 titles. According to Sony, they are developing many new ways to play and connect for PS4 which requires a large investment of resources. As a result, Sony claim they cannot keep such a service free and maintain its quality at the same time considering the cost, and they thus decided that it would be better to charge a fee in order to continue to offer a good service.

The web browser included in the PlayStation 4 console is based on the open source WebKit layout engine, unlike the PlayStation 3 which uses the NetFront browser.

Also, the PDF format is not supported. However, one clear advantage for gamers is being able to cut between gaming and browsing and back again with no loss of gameplay due to the multitasking feature of the web browser. Users may download or buy games and other content from these services. The PlayStation 4 supports playing standard centimeter DVD-Video discs; DVD recordable and rewritable discs except those that have not been finalized ; and standard Blu-ray discs with the exception of Blu-ray Recordable Erasable version 1.

The Media Player application included with the system can be used to play media files on USB storage devices or media servers. The PlayStation 4 Pro also supports videos encoded in H. If users have a PlayStation VR headset connected, they can view degree videos inside the headset.

Though PlayStation 4 users cannot play PlayStation 3 games directly, in , the PlayStation Now cloud-based streaming service allowed for the streaming of selected PS3 games. Supported PS2 games run via software emulation upscaled to high definition on PS4 systems instead of having been remastered.

The initial version of the system software for the PlayStation 4 is 1. Support for the Remote Play and second screen experiences were added in version 1. Both features are accessible from the PlayStation Vita console by using its PS4 Link application, and the second screen functionality is also accessible from smartphones and tablets through the PlayStation Mobile app. It is also able to record or share video clips as well as broadcasting gameplay to Twitch or Ustream.

PS3 includes the ability to store various master and secondary user profiles, manage and explore photos with or without a musical slide show , play music and copy audio CD tracks to an attached data storage device , play movies and video files from the hard disk drive, an optical disc Blu-ray Disc or DVD-Video or an optional USB mass storage or Flash card, compatibility for a USB keyboard and mouse and a web browser supporting compatible-file download function.

The key feature of this application is that it can organize photos into groups according to various criteria. Notable categorizations are colors, ages, or facial expressions of the people in the photos.

Slideshows can be viewed with the application, along with music and playlists. The software was updated with the release of system software version 3. The application is dedicated specifically to 3D photos and features the ability to zoom into 3D environments and change the angle and perspective of panoramas.

A new application was released as part of system software version 3. The software features basic video editing tools including the ability to cut videos and add music and captions. Upon reviewing the PlayStation and Netflix collaboration, Pocket-Lint said "We've used the Netflix app on Xbox too and, as good as it is, we think the PS3 version might have the edge here. PlayStation 3 initially shipped with the ability to install an alternative operating system alongside the main system software; Linux and other Unix -based operating systems were available. The 'OtherOS' functionality was not present in the updated PS Slim models, and the feature was subsequently removed from previous versions of the PS3 as part of the machine's firmware update version 3.

The firmware update 3. On December 8, , U. District Judge Richard Seeborg dismissed the last remaining count of the class action lawsuit other claims in the suit had previously been dismissed , stating: "As a legal matter, Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit partially reversed the dismissal and have sent the case back to the district court.

On March 1, UTC , many of the original "fat" PlayStation 3 models worldwide were experiencing errors related to their internal system clock. The error had many symptoms. Initially, the main problem seemed to be the inability to connect to the PlayStation Network. However, the root cause of the problem was unrelated to the PlayStation Network, since even users who had never been online also had problems playing installed offline games which queried the system timer as part of startup and using system themes.

At the same time many users noted that the console's clock had gone back to December 31, Sony confirmed that there was an error and stated that it was narrowing down the issue and were continuing to work to restore service. On June 29, , Sony released PS3 system software update 3.

PlayStation Portable can connect with PlayStation 3 in many ways, including in-game connectivity. Sony has also demonstrated PSP playing back video content from PlayStation 3 hard disk across an ad hoc wireless network. Remote play has since expanded to allow remote access to PS3 via PSP from any wireless access point in the world.

The service is always connected, [] free, [] and includes multiplayer support. Launched alongside PS3 firmware 3. These enhancements include the ability to have demos and game updates download automatically to PlayStation 3. What's New was announced at Gamescom and was released on September 1, , with PlayStation 3 system software 3. The concept was developed further into a major PlayStation Network feature, which interacts with the [Status Indicator] to display a ticker of all content, excluding recently played content currently in North America and Japan only. The system displays the What's New screen by default instead of the [Games] menu or [Video] menu, if a movie was inserted when starting up.

There are four kinds of content the What's New screen displays and links to, on the sections. The PlayStation Store icons in the [Game] and [Video] section act similarly to the What's New screen, except that they only display and link to games and videos in the PlayStation Store, respectively. A closed beta began in Europe from May and expanded to other territories soon after.

It remained as a perpetual beta until its closure on March 31, Membership was free, but required a PSN account. Home featured places to meet and interact, dedicated game spaces, developer spaces, company spaces, and events.

The service underwent a weekly maintenance and frequent updates. Life with PlayStation, released on September 18, [] to succeed Folding home , was retired November 6, Life with PlayStation used virtual globe data to display news and information by city. Along with Folding home functionality, the application provided access to three other information "channels", the first being the Live Channel offering news headlines and weather which were provided by Google News , The Weather Channel , the University of Wisconsin—Madison Space Science and Engineering Center, among other sources.

The third channel was the United Village channel. United Village was designed to share information about communities and cultures worldwide.

On April 20, , Sony shut down the PlayStation Network and Qriocity for a prolonged interval, revealing on April 23 that this was due to "an external intrusion on our system". Although its PlayStation predecessors had been very dominant against the competition and were hugely profitable for Sony, PlayStation 3 had an inauspicious start, and Sony chairman and CEO Sir Howard Stringer initially could not convince investors of a turnaround in its fortunes. The PS3 lacked the unique gameplay of the more affordable Wii which became that generation's most successful console in terms of units sold.

Furthermore, PS3 had to compete directly with Xbox which had a market head start, and as a result the platform no longer had exclusive titles that the PS2 enjoyed such as the Grand Theft Auto and Final Fantasy series regarding cross-platform games, Xbox versions were generally considered superior in , although by the PS3 versions had reached parity or surpassed , [] and it took longer than expected for PS3 to enjoy strong sales and close the gap with Xbox Sony also continued to lose money on each PS3 sold through , [] although the redesigned "slim" PS3 has cut these losses since then.

Various news agencies , including The Times [] and The Wall Street Journal [] reported that this was due to poor sales, while SCEI maintains that Kutaragi had been planning his retirement for six months prior to the announcement. In January , Kaz Hirai , CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment, suggested that the console may start making a profit by early , stating that, "the next fiscal year starts in April and if we can try to achieve that in the next fiscal year that would be a great thing" and that "[profitability] is not a definite commitment, but that is what I would like to try to shoot for".

Since the system's launch, production costs have been reduced significantly as a result of phasing out the Emotion Engine chip and falling hardware costs. Early PlayStation 3 reviews after launch were critical of its high price and lack of quality games. Game developers regarded the architecture as difficult to program for.

PS3 was, however, commended for its hardware including its Blu-ray home theater capabilities and graphics potential. Critical and commercial reception to PS3 improved over time, after a series of price revisions, Blu-ray's victory over HD DVD , [] and the release of several well received titles. Developers also found the machine difficult to program for. In , Gabe Newell of Valve said "The PS3 is a total disaster on so many levels, I think it's really clear that Sony lost track of what customers and what developers wanted".

He continued "I'd say, even at this late date, they should just cancel it and do a do over. Just say, 'This was a horrible disaster and we're sorry and we're going to stop selling this and stop trying to convince people to develop for it'".

He also claimed that the inclusion of Steamworks Valve's system to automatically update their software independently would help to make the PS3 version of Portal 2 the best console version on the market. He believes these factors are pushing developers away from working on the console. In an interview with The Times Kotick stated "I'm getting concerned about Sony; the PlayStation 3 is losing a bit of momentum and they don't make it easy for me to support the platform.

If we are being realistic, we might have to stop supporting Sony. Despite the initial negative press, several websites have given the system very good reviews mostly regarding its hardware. CNET United Kingdom praised the system saying, "the PS3 is a versatile and impressive piece of home-entertainment equipment that lives up to the hype [ In an interview, Kazuo Hirai , chairman of Sony Computer Entertainment argued for the choice of a complex architecture.

It's the best piece of hardware, without question". The PlayStation 3 Slim received extremely positive reviews as well as a boost in sales; less than 24 hours after its announcement, PS3 Slim took the number-one bestseller spot on Amazon.

It regained the number-one position again one day later. This is in stark contrast to the original PS3's launch in which it was given position number-eight on their "The Top 21 Tech Screwups of " list.

It's amazing that something so small can do so much". However, they criticized the exterior design and the build quality in relation to the original model. Eurogamer called it "a product where the cost-cutting has — by and large — been tastefully done" and said "It's nothing short of a massive win for Sony.

The Super Slim model of PS3 has received positive reviews. Gaming website Spong praised the new Super Slim's quietness, stating "The most noticeable noise comes when the drive seeks a new area of the disc, such as when starting to load a game, and this occurs infrequently.

Criticism was placed on the new disc loader, stating: "The cover can be moved by hand if you wish, there's also an eject button to do the work for you, but there is no software eject from the triangle button menus in the Xross Media Bar XMB interface.

In addition, you have to close the cover by hand, which can be a bit fiddly if it's upright, and the PS3 won't start reading a disc unless you do [close the cover]. Tech media website CNET gave new Super Slim 4 out of 5 stars "Excellent" , saying "The Super Slim PlayStation 3 shrinks a powerful gaming machine into an even tinier package while maintaining the same features as its predecessors: a great gaming library and a strong array of streaming services [ In short, it feels cheap. You don't realize how convenient autoloading disc trays are until they're gone.

Whether it was to cut costs or save space, this move is ultimately a step back. They did praise that the hard drive of the Super Slim model is "the easiest yet. Simply sliding off the side panel reveals the drive bay, which can quickly be unscrewed. There doesn't seem to be any reason for existing PS3 owners to upgrade, but for the prospective PS3 buyer, the Super Slim is probably the way to go if you can deal with not having a slot-loading disc drive.

Pocket-Lint gave Super Slim a very positive review saying "It's much more affordable, brilliant gaming, second-to-none video and media player. Without doubt, if you don't have a PS3, this is the time to buy. Technology magazine T3 gave the Super Slim model a positive review, stating the console is almost "nostalgic" in the design similarities to the original "fat" model, "While we don't know whether it will play PS3 games or Blu-ray discs any differently yet, the look and feel of the new PS3 Slim is an obvious homage to the original PS3, minus the considerable excess weight.

Immediately we would be concerned about the durability of the top loading tray that feels like it could be yanked straight out off the console, but ultimately it all feels like Sony's nostalgic way of signing off the current generation console in anticipation for the PS4.
