I have since worked in many places including Mauritius and Bahrain. I bought a brass sextant from India advertised on e-bay, what a rip off nowhere near as davis as sectants Davis, After more than 30 years my DAVIS is still going strong and even more importantly is still delivering accurate readings.
Beware Indian made sextants even if they bear a well known brand name. Great learning how to use it. One person found this helpful. See all 3 customer reviews. Write a customer review. Most helpful customer reviews on Amazon. After spending a long time reading reviews for Mark 15, Mark 25 and Mark 3, Astra IIIb and other sextants, also after finishing my celestial navigation course and playing with a couple of very different types of sextants and taking sightings, I went ahead and bought a second hand but practically unused Mark 15 and decided to write this review.
I will explain my reasoning below but if you are in the process of shopping for a sextant, you need to think WHY you want to have one. You may think it is sextants and the same for everyone, but it is not. I think there are at least three different categories: 1 A sextant looks so cool, I want one. Having GPS is good sextans what if it stops working because of lightning, cyber war, apocalypse etc. I want to learn more and have fun or I want to sextants myself to navigate in open ocean by only looking sexgants the stars, I want to be a Polynesian!
But you get the idea. Depending on where you land on this scale, your preferences could be vastly different. Davis personally land somewhere between 2 and 3, I call it 2. If you are in the first category and want a sextant for decoration, simply stop reading here and go elsewhere.
Davis Mark 15 is wextants for you. While it looks like a real sextant, it is plastic dwvis unnecessarily expensive in relative terms for a decoration purpose. They look good, much better than Mark They will address your need better for much less. They are eavis meant to work. It is fairly easy to carry multiple sometimes in the order of 10 including mobile phones and tablets receivers onboard and keep them at different places, including in faraday cages oven for lightning sextants.
That said, sailors are opinionated people and they will have very different but equally strong opinions. Have a look at what they have to say. At best you will see many of those contemporary sailors saying it sextants desirable but davis required.
You need to make your own conclusion and decide where you land here for yourself. If you decide you are better off by carrying more GPS receivers, then you can also stop reading and start looking for backup GPS and faraday cages.
You continue reading, so you do want to have a sextant, good. Now it may be good to give some reference point for pricing. You need to decide between these three options.
As you can see, it is a very wide range. It is important to mention that these are all brand new. Sextants last LONG if used properly, especially considering that they are not used that regularly. I used a sextant from and it worked like a charm. So there is a huge second hand market.
The question for a used sextant is not how old it is, how well it has been taken care of and whether it actually works. But there davis the problem. If you are reading this review, it probably means you are trying to learn davis sextants and do not know enough already. If that is the case, how will you know if a second hand sextant is in decent shape?

There was a problem filtering reviews right now. Verified Purchase. I have no idea if there are better machines out there, suffice to say that this was the best available for the price new. It's a bit like buying a second slr camera. There are good ones and then there others So I bought this one in the hope it works properly. It came well packed and intact and it looks plasticky.
But that is no. Keep it clean and properly lubricated and all should be hunky dory, OK? And you can wash it out with salt water on the shore if you need to get sand, grit and small sea life etc.
Then rinse It in clear water to remove the salt. All I need is large expanse of sea! Ho Hum. There is 1 customer review and 2 customer ratings. See all 1 customer reviews. Write a customer review. Most helpful customer reviews on Amazon. It was worthless; neither of us could do sight reductions using this product. When we complained during the class, the instructor--an experienced celestial navigator--took the product and tried to use it; he too was unable to use it.
It is extremely difficult to move the arm in a smooth and easy motion. Another user mentioned lubricating with hand soap; we tried that and it temporarily improved performance. This is a case where spending the money for a higher-quality metal-based instrument would have been the wiser choice. The product's only virtue is its light weight compared to metal sextants.
Works well and is easy to hold for sights as well as accurate shooting the sun. The filters work very well. I do wish that now with the advent of laser technology that the numbers cut into the arc and drum also the micrometer making it easier to read. The light is a bit weak for night sights but would not want it to much brighter. I decided Previously worked only with the metallic sextant. I decided to try this. After the metal it seems "soft.
I can not advise for serious and constant use, but as a backup navigation tool is quite suitable. I recently acquired this sextant albeit not via Amazon. I have owned a number of sextants and consider myself a somewhat experienced amateur astronomer and sailor.
The scope is a quality optic and while not a Zeiss as on some high end metal German instruments, sighting in objects is a breeze. The micrometer settings are easy to adjust and read. The unit is light weight about 15 ounces and easy to hold so ergonomics are top rate. Heavy metal sextants can be a drag. Some purists will expound on metal vs plastic, but I have not experienced any major issues or inaccuracies due to thermal changes whatsoever.
A metal sextant will run about 3 pounds, so I prefer the lighter plastic instrument. The box is plastic as well, so if you want a metal sextant in a fine oil rubbed walnut or teak box with brass corners, this is not the unit for you. If you want a great modern sextant that will help you accurately navigate or serve as a top rate GPS back up, you can't go wrong with the Davis Model The Model 15 is similar except for the illumination of the dials and the "full horizon" mirror.
The Model 25 is grey plastic vs black plastic for the Model I sort of prefer black, perhaps because it looks more like a high end metal sextant, but in the dark, the grey plastic for me is again more ergonomic. I am puzzled that an earlier reviewer gave the Model 25 a ONE star rating, primarily based on price while acknowledging that the 15 and 25 are very similar.
I have worked with both, and personally prefer the If you shop around, after discounts, the price difference between the two is minimal. Given the choice, I would opt for the Model 25 due to the additional features AND the grey colored plastic.
The plastic construction is pretty sturdy and I believe will hold up very well over time. Powered by Miva.
