What times do trains depart? Trains depart on minute intervals, from a. When should we arrive for our train ride with Thomas? Is there assigned seating on the train? I have to say it was very enjoyable. Beyond the actual train ride there were some mini rides for toddlers, fair type food, story time, face painting, and a tremendous Thomas gift shop.

Also you can meet Sir Toppum Hat and of course Thomas. If you kids enjoy Thomas this is it! We were there on Easter weekend and the Easter Bunny made a special visit while on the train.

Boy was that nice for the kids. The train ride is relatively short I think 45 minutes for the whole ride, but it is enough for the kids. We will come back for the train and steam boat ride. We have been on the train twice: once for an elegant dinner voyage along the beautiful Connecticut River and the other was a trip to the "North Pole" with our grandchildren and extended family. You board a historic train powered by an actual steam locomotive for a ride along the river and through the scenic woods from Essex Village up past Gillette Castle and near the Goodspeed Opera House.

The Christmas ride has elves on board en route who sing holiday songs and get the passengers involved. Santa and Mrs. Claus stop by to say hello once you arrive at the "North Pole". As you wait to board the train, you can visit the train museum, which has model trains and other fun things inside.

This is a great family or couples attraction. The trains are nice coal burning and the real deal. I have seen other people complain about being seated -but we had no trouble - they had us allocated to one car and did not over book.

The only challenge was getting our large party all assembled. There was an elf entertainer and several guests. I don't care for loud music and was worried at first that it would be a problem - but - the kids liked it and the last half of the trip was more of sing along. I enjoyed that part of it. The cocoa was great and promptly delivered. I am told the cookies were good too - but being gluten free - wasn't going to eat them.

All in all it was a memorable trip for the kids ages 5,3,and 1. I am real train enthusiast, but I ended up being fairly bored by the experience. I'm not sure what the problem was, but probably it was simply that the scenery one goes by just didn't seem that interesting. I think the fact that it was rainy the day we went did not help matters because that prevented people from getting out and getting good shots of the steam engine.

By contrast, I really loved everything about the Georgetown Loop Railroad in Colorado and found that railroad as interesting as I found this one boring. We did not take the option of doing the riverboat trip on top of the train trip here on the Essex.

We did go in the first class car where you can get refreshments and that was pleasant. The main problem was that the scenery wasn't that interesting and the narration didn't improve things much. I have actually posted the entire trip on YouTube and so if anyone wants to virtually experience a trip to decide for themselves whether the trip is worth it, that is an option. The price was fairly high considering the length of the trip and the un-extraordinary scenery.
